Apple’s Surprising Role in Blue-Collar Job Creation in India

Apple, synonymous with high-tech gadgets, is now a surprising leader in a very different arena: blue-collar job creation in India. Since the Indian government introduced a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones in August 2021, Apple’s supply chain has emerged as the country’s biggest employer of blue-collar workers.

The scheme, designed to boost domestic manufacturing, has proven fruitful for Apple. By working with contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Wistron, Apple has directly created an estimated 150,000 blue-collar jobs in India. These positions often cater to young adults, many entering the workforce for the first time. The impact extends beyond factory walls, with the Apple ecosystem generating an additional 300,000 indirect jobs.

This development reflects a shift in Apple’s manufacturing strategy.

While China has long been a dominant player, the PLI scheme has incentivized companies to diversify their production bases. India, with its large workforce and growing tech industry, has become an attractive alternative.

For India, the Apple boom is a welcome sign. The country is aiming to create more manufacturing jobs and reduce reliance on imports. The influx of new positions provides opportunities for young people and contributes to the overall economic development.

However, some experts caution that long-term sustainability is key. Ensuring fair labor practices, providing adequate training, and maintaining a competitive business environment will be crucial in keeping India a frontrunner in Apple’s manufacturing network.

One thing is certain: iPhones are not just sleek devices anymore. They have become a symbol of a growing tech landscape in India, one that’s creating a wave of blue-collar job opportunities.
