Astronaut Team Announced for Historic Gaganyaan Mission

Marking a momentous occasion for the Indian space program, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the four astronauts chosen to embark on Gaganyaan, India’s first crewed space mission. This announcement signifies a significant milestone, propelling India into the elite group of nations capable of conducting independent human spaceflight.

The chosen astronauts, all seasoned Indian Air Force pilots, are:

  • Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair
  • Group Captain Ajit Krishnan
  • Group Captain Angad Pratap
  • Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla

These individuals have undergone rigorous training in Russia and are currently continuing their preparation at the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) astronaut training facility in Bengaluru.

The Gaganyaan mission, targeted for launch sometime between 2024-2025, aims to send a three-member crew on a three-day orbital mission aboard an indigenously developed spacecraft.
