Google’s Strategic Overhaul: Restructuring Sales Division and Embracing Automation Amidst Potential Layoffs

According to a report from The Information, Google, under Alphabet’s ownership, is gearing up to revamp a significant portion of its 30,000-strong advertising sales division. The restructuring, as shared by Sean Downey, responsible for ad sales to major clients in the Americas, was discussed during a recent company-wide meeting. While specifics about potential layoffs were not explicitly outlined, there’s a plan in motion to reorganize the ad sales teams.

Sources familiar with Google’s strategy mentioned the intention to streamline their workforce, potentially through layoffs, by reallocating employees within the large customer sales unit. This reallocation would impact those managing relationships with key advertisers, as per The Information.

This restructuring initiative aligns with Google’s increasing reliance on machine learning tools to facilitate ad purchasing across its platforms, including the search engine and YouTube, among others.

As of now, Google has not responded to requests from Reuters for comments on these reported plans.

Earlier this year, in January, Alphabet had announced a global workforce reduction plan of 12,000 jobs, representing about 6% of its total employees.

In a separate move in June, Google implemented layoffs within the team at Waze, the mapping app, as part of integrating its advertising system with Google Ads technology.
