Walmart took the spotlight at CES by introducing advanced GenAI search technology designed to aid shoppers. At the conference, the retail giant unveiled two AI-driven tools: the GenAI search tool, a collaboration between Microsoft’s AI models and Walmart’s shopper data, allows users to search for products based on specific needs rather than brand names or items. For instance, shoppers can search using terms like “football watch party” or “planning a unicorn-themed party for my daughter” to receive a tailored list of products.
Initially available for iOS users, this feature will extend to the Walmart website and Android app later this year. Additionally, Walmart is developing “Walmart InHome Replenishment,” a tool to assist subscribers of its InHome delivery service in swiftly restocking frequently ordered items.
This move echoes the broader trend in various industries, with companies like Amazon and Volkswagen incorporating Generative AI technology like ChatGPT for different purposes. Meanwhile, Walmart introduced My Assistant, an AI tool for employees across 11 countries, and an AI-driven service at Sam’s Club stores that eliminates the need for receipt verification by utilizing cameras and AI processing, set to expand to 600 clubs by year-end due to positive shopper feedback regarding exit wait times.
