Meta Platforms Slapped with €5.85M Fine in Italy for Gambling Ads Violations

Italian regulators have slapped Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, with a hefty fine of 5.85 million euros ($6.45 million) for violating the country’s prohibition on gambling advertisements. This penalty pertains to various profiles, accounts, and sponsored content across Facebook and Instagram that promoted gambling or games involving cash prizes, as stated by Italy’s communications watchdog AGCOM in a recent announcement.

Joining the list of fined tech giants, AGCOM had previously penalized Alphabet Inc’s YouTube with a fine of 2.25 million euros and Amazon’s Twitch with 900,000 euros for similar violations. This crackdown underscores the authorities’ strict stance against online platforms featuring or promoting gambling activities, signaling a push for adherence to national advertising regulations.
